Cue the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, an ambitious - if loosely defined - project unveiled Monday by the company, in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Michael Tilson Thomas and composer Tan Dun. About a dozen other orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, are also taking part internationally.

The idea, according to YouTube's product marketing manager, Ed Sanders, is to use the company's video-sharing technology to connect classical music lovers from around the world in a virtual community.

"There are a lot of communities and passions on the YouTube platform," he said, "and classical music is one of the things that exists in nearly all the countries around the world."

The first branches of the project will take place both online and in meatspace - otherwise known in more traditional lingo as Carnegie Hall.
